In the Urban Priestess Mystery School, THE MOTHER is the archetype in the Wheel of the Year who governs the zodiac house of Cancer.
Cancer is the 4th house of the zodiac wheel and forms the base. This represents the foundation of life, rooted in the Mother and in the home. Think of this house and archetype as the roots of your emotional health and vitality.
Cancer is ruled by the Moon and honors the shifting phases of feminine power. She is a bottomless water sign with the cardinal quality, which brings forth pioneering energy and initiates the new season of summer. Born between June 21-July 22, she coincides with the Summer Solstice and the abundance of nourishing life force energy that is the essence of the Mother.
Cancer is born ready to navigate the most complex and subtle terrain of the emotional worlds. She seeks to know herself through her feelings and has a rich textural world filled with the cycles of her emotions. She is empathic by nature and truly feels the world through the fluid waters of connectivity.
The house of Cancer is represented by the Mother Archetype, which means this moon cycle focuses on home, family, the emotional realm, food and generative sustenance of all kinds.

The new moon is in Cancer at 7:31pm PDT on Friday June 23rd.
The New Moon is when the Sun and Moon are aligned, with the Sun and Earth on opposite sides of the Moon. This leaves the side of the Moon facing the Earth in complete darkness, which is why we can not see the New Moon.
Setting New Moon Intentions
Acknowledging the New Moon in its cycle is one way that you can connect more closely with the rhythm of nature – which allows you to attune more closely to your own intuition. The beginning of the Moon Cycle is an invitation to start fresh, call in intentions, and set the tone as you prepare for the energy of the coming weeks.
The journey of an Urban Priestess is about getting really clear on your deepest desires, so that you can powerfully voice your truth and manifest your dreams.
Set aside time at each New Moon to clear your slate and start fresh with a new list of intentions for the coming Moon Cycle.
Create a Sacred Space. Create an altar for the New Moon to symbolize the energy. Find a space in your home that is dedicated to cultivating your spiritual practices.
For the Cancer New Moon, find images and objects that represent the Mother Archetype to you.
I (Ashley) created my altar, to the right, with:
- Leaves from Aspen, where I feel most at home.
- Copper Heart Altar Plate, symbolizing fertility & unconditional love.
- Feather ring, from my maternal grandmother.
- Rose Quartz bracelet, from my mother and symbolic of the deep love of the heart.
Remember that the most important thing in building an altar or creating a ritual is that the objects are meaningful to you and hold symbolic power for you. Trust your intuition.
Write Your List. Allow yourself time to drop in before you begin. Try a few minutes of meditation or breath work to focus and clear.
Open your journal to a new page to symbolize fresh start. Make a list of 10 or less intentions for this new moon.
Dream big as you generate this list, and write using “I am” statements. Close with another short meditation or prayer and keep your list close as you move through this Moon Cycle.
The most potent time for manifestation is the 48 hours once the new moon begins, so it is best to get in the habit of setting your intentions within those first 2 days.
